ROCHESTER – Running a bakery means being in the kitchen early in the morning, preparing fresh treats for customers that day.

This week, for Matt Shelton and Hi Quality Bakery in Cannon Falls, bakery management has included night work due to a special order of 3,000 donuts.

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, Bridging the Gap is hosting a Thrive Conference at the Mayo Civic Center and attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest donut wall.

Early in the summer, the bakery was asked about making the donuts for the attempt. It’s the biggest order Shelton and his team have taken on for donuts, but not the bakery’s first rodeo with big orders.

“The closest is when we made, decorated and donated over 525 graduation cakes in 2020,” Shelton said.

The entire process of making the donuts – weighing ingredients, mixing, frying, frosting or frosting and packaging – will take Shelton and three other staff members around 15 hours. The team began fulfilling the large order early Thursday morning.

Shelton estimated the cost of the additional 500 pounds of ingredients, plus labor, packaging, delivery, and custom napkins, at $3,000. The bakery is donating donuts for free for the event.

The donuts will also be strategically decorated: approximately 600 of the donuts will be covered in white icing and sprinkles, and the remaining donuts will be glazed.

“They will be strategically placed on the wall to make a design with the 20% donuts that are white, and the glazing will be the background of the design,” Shelton said.

Saturday morning, Shelton and his team will deliver the donuts to the Mayo Civic Center. The world record attempt will start at 7 a.m. with the official decision on the success of the attempt after 10 a.m.
