It took just seconds for Masked Singer viewers to be convinced that Donuts was none other than football legend Michael Owen.

Donuts was the third act in action as the ITV show returned for a third series on New Year’s Day, featuring a new cast of elaborately dressed celebrities.

After Robobunny defeated Mushroom on the opening chant, Donuts got his turn on stage and moments after his performance of Eye of the Tiger many people were watching former Liverpool, Newcastle and England striker Michael at home behind the mask.

Michael’s sweet Scouse accent appeared in both the VT and his first Masked Singer performance, with the clue package also mentioning the word “jockey”, which could have been a firm nod to the fact that Michael owns racehorses, as well as a number of things that could have been football-related.

Add to that a crisp hint alluding to Michael who once pitched Cheese & Owen crisps for Walker’s and they certainly add up.

His name was the one that dominated the tweets at the end of the Donuts song.

One fan tweeted: ” #donuts is Michael Owen. We said before he even sings, we’re even more convinced,” with a second, firmly agreeing, adding, “The donuts definitely looked like Michael Owen to me and the cues all matched the football, the horses and something salty Cheese and Owen chips!”

A third reacted: ‘I think donuts are 100% Michael Owen’, while a Newcastle fan joked on Twitter: ‘Donuts haven’t hurt themselves yet, can’t be Michael Owen then’

Whoever Donuts is, we’ll see more of them beating Chandelier to avoid falling into the bottom three.
