The return of a donut shop in downtown Bellingham turned out to be a nice early Christmas present for most of those who got up early to try it out.

JoJoe’s Donuts opened at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22 and – after selling hundreds of donuts – was sold out by 8:45 a.m., according to Joseph Letourneau, owner of the business with JoAnne Dutton. The donut shop is located at 1301 Commercial Street, near the Commercial Street parking garage.

Letourneau said the customers were kind, supportive and patient on the first day. One of the customers bought some of the last donuts available and started sharing them with the kids in the line who weren’t going to get any because of the store sale.

“That’s what makes Bellingham so special,” said Létourneau.

Calling itself an upscale donut shop with a gourmet twist, the shop also offers cinnamon buns and gluten-free options. While there are several desserts and bakeries in the downtown area, there hasn’t been a donut shop in the neighborhood since Rocket Donuts closed in 2019.

Now that it’s open, hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, unless they are full in advance. Details can be found on the Jo Joe’s Donuts website.
