Australia’s best meat pie for 2021 has been crowned in the official Great Aussie Pie competition.

Pinjarra Bakery in Pinjarra, Western Australia, an hour south of Perth, was named the winner in the “plain pie” category.

The bakery had contenders in several other categories, including best plain ground meat pie and best gourmet red meat pie, but it was its classic plain meat pie that reigned supreme.

Runner-up was Jack’s Bakery, also in Western Australia, with its chunky pie.

Mick DiSalvatore, lead judge, said: ‘The winning pie ultimately had a top and bottom colored crust, neither too thick nor too thin, the filling had lovely bits of meat with a lovely sauce and was perfectly seasoned – basically how a thick beef pie should be.’

The ratio of filling to crust was also perfect.

The national competition saw hundreds of entrants from across the country and were judged on the thickness, texture and taste of the dough.

Of the 18 different categories, four were won by bakeries from Western Australia, five from Victoria, two from South Australia and seven from Queensland.

Gourmet pies, poultry pies, vegetarian pies and sausage rolls were also judged.

Paradise Bakehouse in Queensland won gold in the categories of Best ‘Gourmet Pie’, Best ‘Gourmet Poultry Pie’ and Best ‘Gourmet Poultry Pie’.

The Little Red Grape Bakery in South Australia won the ‘gourmet sausage roll’ and ‘gourmet poultry apprentice’ categories.
