But times have changed and Wrecking Ball Donuts in Dundee opens on Friday to offer a huge range of flavors, from salted caramel pretzel to brown sugar and cinnamon to pecans.
The business is owned by 2014 MasterChef winner Jamie Scott, head chef of Newport Restaurant and two Newport Bakery branches, one of which opened in June this year.
This will be another co-project with Scott’s business partner Colin Petrie, as the duo already jointly run the Smoking Barrel street food trailer and Daily Grind Coffee Co, with a branch in Dundee and Arbroath.
Mr Petrie said: âEach Newport Bakery has a Daily Grind inside serving coffees and drinks and each Daily Grind cafe has a Newport Bakery counter with a selection of their pastries, cakes and baked goods, so that brands and companies align and work with each other. . “
Now Wrecking Ball Donuts, with its huge neon sign, is moving next to the Daily Grind Co branch on Exchange Street in Dundee.
âWe just got an offer to take the building and it seemed like a great size and a great location to do something like that,â Petrie said.
âThere are always huge factors to consider when opening a new business at any time, let alone whatever is going on right now.
“But we thought it was the right solution and something hopefully a little different next to all the amazing and exciting projects and developments happening in the city.”
In addition to operating a frozen Coca-Cola and Fanta machine, they will be offering up to a dozen varieties of donuts each day.
The chocolate oblivion is probably the most decadent, as it’s topped with its own chocolate ganache, chocolate mousse, chocolate frosting, triple chocolate brownie pieces, and white chocolate chips. It could be something to rival the iconic fudge donut, sold at Dundee’s Fisher & Donaldson.
Mr Petrie said: âThe menus will change regularly and keep the offer interesting, but they already include raspberry sorbets, a vegan cherry oven and a gluten-free pineapple.
“We’re definitely going to do something very different from what’s out there.”
