BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – As Kern County moves to the next level of reopening this week, some local theaters are expected to open this weekend.

Maya Cinemas announced on social media that it will open its Bakersfield and Delano theaters on Friday after Kern County moved to the next level of reopening. The company said it will take safety measures to keep moviegoers safe amid COVID-19.

Movies premiering at Maya Cinemas this weekend include newer releases such as “The War With Grandpa”, “Love and Monsters” and “Tenet” as well as Halloween classics including “Hocus Pocus” and ” The Nightmare Before Christmas”. ” To buy tickets, go to mayacinemas.com.

Reading Cinemas Valley Plaza with IMAX will also start showing movies on Friday, the company says website.

AMC’s Bakersfield Cinema, located at 4200 California Ave., will also reopen on Friday, according to AMC’s website. Tickets can be purchased here.

Studio Movie Grill in Bakersfield, located at 2733 Calloway Dr., will begin showing movies on Sunday, October 18, the SMG website shows.

Regal Cinemas temporarily closed all movie theaters in the United States last week, including the Edwards Theater in southwest Bakersfield. It is not known at this time when the theater will reopen.

According to state guidelines, theaters in the red tier are required to limit capacity to 25% or 100 people, whichever is lower.
