Jawea dairy free frozen dessert is no longer in production. For other available options, see our Dairy Free Ice Cream section. Some brands that use coconut cream include Fronen, Coconut Bliss, and O’My.

The creative flavors and brilliant packaging immediately set Jawea dairy free frozen desserts apart and caught my eye as I walked through the ice cream aisle. Once I realized they were dairy free, vegan AND made with simple ingredients, I immediately picked up two pints.

Jawea is a New York-based brand that sells its pints along the East Coast and also ships them to customers across the country.

Their coconut cream frozen dessert flavors are “inspired by adventure”, which shows in their somewhat “wild” ingredient lists. To create each unique strain, they use pure flavors, like bourbon vanilla from Madagascar, roasted Vietnamese cinnamon, sea salt from Maldon, Thai chili, and cold brew coffee.

Jawea Dairy Free Frozen Desserts Tasting Notes

Jawea is currently available in five unique flavors, and so far I have tried the following.

Horchata

For this classic horchata flavor, Jawea uses rice flour with the vanilla and cinnamon mentioned above. I have never tried the horchata so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But once opened I noticed the lovely spicy spots and was prepared for a surge of warm flavors.

Unfortunately, I found this flavor a bit flat. The spice was surprisingly subdued and gave way to a simple flavor of vanilla ice cream. It’s tasty and has a nice creamy texture, but simpler than I expected. Nevertheless, it will be perfect on brownies, to garnish fruit crumbles, or in a float!

Dulce No Leche

Where the Horchata left off in flavor, the Dulce No Leche picked up. This swirled salted caramel ice cream is a dream! It’s perfectly sweet and salty with a really satisfying finish. The coconut cream base is rich and decadent, yet light enough to let the caramel shine.

And that crazy caramel swirl really won my heart! It has a weird lamb’s lettuce which I loved and just enough salt to balance the sweetness. It’s a flavor that I would definitely buy over and over again.

Innovative flavors using simple ingredients

February 25, 2019

These coconut cream based ice cream pints feature innovative flavors using simple ingredients. Of the two that I have tried, one has been completely successful. The Dulce No Leche was perfect. It had a lightly flavored ice cream base that let the stretchy, chewy caramel take center stage. Caramel also had a place on sweet-salty balance. The Horchata tasted delicious as a basic vanilla ice cream, but unfortunately it didn’t offer the warmer flavors I expected. However, the texture of both was rich, creamy, succulent, and not at all icy. I really hope to try more Jawea flavors and enjoy Dulce No Leche again!
